Two men were critically ill in hospital last night after their mini motorbike was in a crash with a car at the weekend.

The 22-year-old motorcyclist and his 19-year-old passenger, from Stanley, County Durham, were not wearing crash helmets when they crashed with a Vauxhall Cavalier on Tyne Road in the town at 10.15pm on Friday.

They suffered serious leg and head injuries and were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for emergency surgery.

Museum delay

The RNLI has confirmed that the Grace Darling Museum in Bamburgh, being redeveloped at a cost of almost £1.5m, will not now be ready until next autumn.

The delay has been attributed to planning complications involving the compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act.
