Work started yesterday on the newest station on the Tyne and Wear Metro system.
The Simonside station in South Shields will cost £3.2m to build and is expected to open in the autumn. It will have five trains in each direction per hour during the day.
Nexus director general Bernard Garner said: "Once completed, this station will be of great benefit to Simonside area of South Shields."
THE changing face of a County Durham town is captured in a book to be launched this week.
Memories of Barnard Castle, published by County Durham Books, the publishing arm of Durham County Council, is a photographic study of what life was like in the community.
Over 50 pictures - some dating back to the 19th Century - show how the town and its people have developed. It will be available from April 25.

BERWICK Borough Council is to launch its first ever Customer Services Charter.
The document highlights the way in which the local authority will deliver a wide range of services and is scheduled to be reviewed in six months, taking account of comments from residents in the district.
A VILLAGE waste recovery centre will close for two days this week for an overhaul.
The Wooler centre will be shut on Wednesday and Thursday, when new containers for rubbish will be installed. The nearest alternative centres open for residents will be Berwick, Alnwick or North Sunderland.
