A would-be robber wearing a clown mask tried to hold up a Northumberland shop.

Grandfather-of-four Malkitl Singh was busy tidying his shop on Alexandra Road in Ashington, when the masked man burst into Park Stores at 7.30pm on Monday.

Mr Singh confronted the man to defend his business.

“I was tidying the fridge up and he came in and was a few yards from me and he had a big knife, more than two foot,” said Mr Singh.

“I just wanted to defend myself and he started fighting me, he said he wanted the money, the takings.

“I was very shocked. When someone with such a big knife comes in it is terrifying.”

Following the struggle the masked man made off empty-handed into Hirst Park.

“When he was coming my way I was very very scared,” said Mr Singh.“He had the knife and I had nothing, it was frightening. The mask was horrible, a clown mask.”

Police have launched an investigation. Detective Sergeant Tracey Moore, from Northumbria Police, said: “Thankfully the shopkeeper wasn’t injured but he was obviously left very shaken. Investigations are ongoing and I’d urge anyone with information to come forward.”

Contact police on 101, quoting log number 1139 10/03/14, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
