Large hole appears in Alnwick street

A large hole has appeared in the tarmac on Hotspur Street in Alnwick this afternoon

A large hole has appeared in a road in a Northumberland market town this afternoon.

The opening at Hotspur Street in Alnwick appeared at 1.30pm in the tarmac and closed the road to traffic.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to Hotspur Street in Alnwick at 1.30pm following reports of a large hole appearing in the road.

“This is the street to the left of the arch before entering Bondgate.

“Officers attended and the road has been cordoned off to vehicles as a precaution, with diversions in place.

“It is still open to pedestrians and officers are liaising with Northumberland County Council in relation to the road.”

A council spokeswoman said: “We have put signs up to stop buses and HGVs going up to the Bondgate Tower.

“If they go up Hotspur Street they risk being stuck.

“We have people on site, we are carrying out a full survey of the hole and we should know more by tomorrow.”

Alnwick resident Claire Barber, who runs her own PR company, took pictures of the hole while out at a meeting nearby.

She reported tailbacks on Bondgate Without due to the road closure.

The appearance of the hole has sparked amusement on social networking website Facebook, with one user writing: “It takes you to the next realm, who’s coming?”
