Hundreds of North East families enjoy Bonfire Night

Fireworks displays were held across the region last night with hundreds of North East families turning out to enjoy Bonfire Night

Hundreds of families enjoyed an evening of spectacular fireworks at events across the North East.

Colourful explosions lit up the sky to celebrate Bonfire Night at various venues yesterday.

Saltwell Park, in Gateshead, and Elswick Park and Walker Park, in Newcastle, were among the sites packed with parents and children.

Scores of people braved the cold weather and streamed into Saltwell Park to feast their eyes on the display. And the Ouseburn Community Fireworks were held at City Stadium.

Elsewhere, the Beamish Museum, in County Durham, the Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, in Wallsend, and the Blue Flames Conference and Leisure Centre, in Benton, hosted stunning displays.

Firefighters, police officers and council staff were working throughout the region to prevent anti-social behaviour in the run-up to Bonfire night.

Northumbria Police assistant chief constable Greg Vant urged people to attend organised fireworks displays and said extra officers were on patrol to reassure residents and deal with any fireworks misuse.
