A HAIRDRESSING chain from the North East is up for a clutch of industry gongs including the prestigious British Hairdresser of the Year award.

Gary Hooker and Michael Young, who own Hooker & Young, which has five salons in the North East, will join hairdressing greats such as Trevor Sorbie, John Frieda, Nicky Clarke and Charles Worthington if they pick up the top gong.

They are the only hairdressers from the North East to have been nominated for British Hairdresser of the Year award. The pair have also been shortlisted for Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year in the same awards, and Marcus King, who works in their Wynyard salon, has made the finals for the North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year.

Hooker & Young is also one of only six finalists in the 2011 British Hairdressing Business Awards. The salon group is in line for the Salon Design Award, while Lindsey Scott, who works in their salon in Gosforth, Newcastle, is a finalist in the Manager of the Year category.

Mr Hooker said: “This has been an absolutely incredible year for Hooker & Young and to be recognised among your peers for your business acumen is a wonderful feeling.

“The nomination has created a real buzz among our team and our clients and is a fantastic achievement and honour – not only for ourselves, but for the salon team and business as a whole.”

Held by Hairdressers Journal International, the British Hairdressing Business Awards are now celebrating their 14th anniversary and are designed to specifically reward excellence and exceptional business practice.

“Year-on-year, the standard of entries has grown and developed,” said publisher/editor-in-chief of Hairdressers Journal International, Jayne Lewis-Orr. “Entries are alive with innovation, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial expertise, showing amazing skills across the breadth of business management, and this year was no exception.

“The judges had a very difficult job selecting the finalists in each category. To achieve finalist status in these awards is a tremendous testimony to Hooker & Young’s successful business acumen.”

Mr Hooker and Mr Young will discover if they have been crowned British Hairdresser of the Year at a star-studded awards ceremony and dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel, a JW Marriott Hotel, Park Lane, London on November 28. The winners of the Hairdressing Business Awards will be announced on September 12.

Hooker & Young has salons in Jesmond, Gosforth, both Newcastle, Seaham, Wynyard and Darlington.
