The Sea King helicopter and the South Shields volunteer life brigade were mobilised after the man in his 20s called the coastguard saying he did not know where he was. He was found on a path at The Leas in South Shields at 7.45am and taken to hospital. Coastguards believe he may have fallen about 30ft from a cliff the night before.

999 man quits

AN ambulance service boss has said farewell after 30 years in the job.

Bedroom blaze

A MAN had to be rescued from his bedroom yesterday after a blaze broke out in an upstairs flat.

The man, in his 40s, was helped from his home on Palmerston Walk in Team Valley, Gateshead, at 3.20am. He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

Chip pan fire

TWO people were given oxygen after being rescued from their home after a chip pan fire.

The householders were rescued by firefighters from Blyth and Cramlington after the fire broke out in the kitchen of their first floor home on The Close, Thompson Street in Blyth, Northumberland, at 5am.

REVISED plans by Persimmon Homes for a 50-acre business park at Northgate Hospital on the outskirts of Morpeth have been submitted to Castle Morpeth Borough Council.

Consultations will be carried out with local residents, some of whom fear the proposal will mean increased traffic problems on nearby roads.

Worried walker

A MAN was rescued by police yesterday after getting into trouble while out walking his dog on the coast near Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

He contacted police on his mobile phone after getting trapped between the rocks and the sea and was guided to safety.
