A BUSINESSMAN shot by masked gunmen is being protected by police guards.

The family of Amjed Malik have been allowed in to visit him as he recovers from surgery on the gunshot wound in his leg, at Newcastle General Hospital.

Police were last night continuing their inquiries with an incident room being set-up to deal with the attack, which took place in the exclusive Darras Hall estate, early on Sunday morning.

A 33-year-old Newcastle man was yesterday arrested in connection to the incident and held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit assault. He was helping police with their inquiries.

Mr Malik’s relatives confirmed guards were standing watch over the victim.

One family member said: “He’s doing well. He’s got police guards on his ward. His mother has been to see him.”

His condition has been described as comfortable and not life threatening.

A female friend of Mr Malik’s was also understood to be under police protection following a call to The Journal on Monday.

Detective Chief Insp Paul Young said: “I understand that this incident has caused concern to people living in the area and I would like to reassure them that we are working hard to identify those responsible.”

Anyone with any information should ring police on 0345 604-3043.
