Cash-conscious householders in the North-East are the best in the country for making sure they don't waste energy.
British Gas carried out a survey into the energy efficiency of more than a million UK homes.
The Energy Savers Report found that one in every three pounds spent on energy in homes is wasted through poor energy efficiency, but also revealed a North-South divide, with householders in the North more energy efficient than in the South.
The North-East has six entries in the top 10 areas for efficiency. Easington in County Durham is second, Hartlepool fourth, Chester-le-Street fifth, Blyth Valley seventh, Wear Valley eighth and Stockton 10th.
In a league of 25 energy efficient cities, Sunderland is third and Newcastle sixth.
But we are less careful when it comes to boiling the kettle. The trust found people in the North-East waste £5.5m a year by boiling more water than they need for drinks.
