A COUPLE from Gateshead have won nearly £200,000 on the lottery after accidentally buying two tickets.

John Ord, 52, a labourer, and his wife of 20 years Karen, 44, have been playing Lotto since it began.

Although it is usually Karen’s job to buy their Lotto ticket, on the morning of last Saturday Karen asked John if he could pick it up while he was out in Newcastle with their sons.

When he got to the paper shop he called to double check that Karen still needed him to buy the ticket but couldn’t get through so he bought one anyway, unbeknown to him that she had also managed to make it to the shop and play their special numbers.

As they sat watching the National Lottery Draw show that night the couple froze in shock as their numbers appeared one by one. Jubilee celebrations paled into insignificance as the couple realised that their luck had come in twice with five numbers and the bonus ball.

Karen called her mum who was holidaying in Great Yarmouth to tell her the news and she couldn’t believe it.

Karen said: “I always announce the jackpot to my husband when the draw show comes on. When our numbers came out it was unbelievable. We still can’t believe it and we keep watching the draw back again and again. I lost my dad to cancer nearly six years ago and I always say good night to him and ask him to send good luck and he has delivered in style-twice!”

John continues: “It’s a fantastic feeling. Our two youngest boys are really excited but our eldest is very cool about the whole thing and taking it in his stride. I love my work so I don’t want to give it up but the win means that we can now sit back, relax and enjoy life.”

Although they have kept celebrations low key, the couple have toasted their win with the family and plan to treat their four sons, aged 12-17, which will include taking everyone away on holiday somewhere hot.

John also has his eye on a new car, but nothing “too flash”.

The winning numbers were made up of a combination of the family’s birth dates, including their second eldest son who was born on Christmas day.

The winning tickets were bought from Felling Post Office in Gateshead and Carey Newsagents at the Metro Station in Heworth, Gateshead.

The winning numbers in the Lotto draw on June 2 were 16, 18, 20, 25, 29 and 34 and the bonus ball was 15. The jackpot winner took £4,392,003.
