Three places are available to represent 83,000 inhabitants of the Durham City district, but only 500 people registered to vote, according to Lib Dem group leader Nigel Martin.

LOW-PAID workers will be about £600 a year better off, after an increase in the national minimum wage .

About 80,000 employees in the region are expected to benefit from the rise, which takes the hourly rate for those over 21 from £5.05 to £5.35. For those aged 18 to 21, it will rise from £4.25 to £4.45, while the rate for 16 to 17-year-olds will go up from £3 to £3.30.
