American singer Donny Osmond last night announced a UK autumn tour which will conclude at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena on October 28.

It is two years since the 1970s heartthrob last toured this country, performing to capacity crowds.

Culture cut

A FORMER mayor of Berwick is challenging the decision of the borough council to cut the grant it makes to The Maltings Arts Centre in Berwick.

Councillors agreed to reduce the amount by £17,000 a year for the next three years as part of a programme aimed at making savings of £500,000.

But Coun Liz Breckons has questioned the move.

PARISH councillors in Wooler have welcomed the news that the town's tourist information centre is to remain open this year after all.

Berwick Borough Council considered closing the facility to save cash, but then shelved the idea after local councillors described tourism as the life-blood of the area.

WEAR Valley District Council chief executive, Iain Phillips announced yesterday that he is to retire at the end of May after six years at the helm.

Compost gift

A MOUNTAIN of compost is to be given away free of charge in County Durham this week.

Durham County Council is giving away stockpiles of compost made from garden waste collected from kerbside recycling and waste recycling centres.

It will be given away in various locations in the county - starting on Thursday, March 8 at B&Q Bishop Auckland and going through to Darlington on April 15.

In the swim

SWIMMERS are set to dive in at the deep end in a bid to raise money for a cancer charity.

The pool at Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre in Bishop Auckland will be available for swimmers taking part in the annual Swimathon, which will donate money this year to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The Swimathon Foundation is looking for 20,000 swimmers to take part nationally and hope to raise £1.5million for cancer sufferers. The Swimathon takes place between March 22 and March 25.
