Denise Welch was surrounded by friends, family and famous faces on Saturday as she married her fiance during a sun-kissed ceremony in Portugal.
But there was one important guest missing – her son Matthew, who had a date supporting music legends The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park.
While a crowd of friends and family travelled to the Algarve to witness the popular actress and presenter wed her third husband – and agent – 40-year-old Lincoln Townley, Matthew was warming up a sell out crowd in the capital with his band, The 1975.
And although Denise was obviously disappointed not to have the eldest of two sons from her 24-year marriage to Tim Healy at the ceremony, she was as proud as any mum would be to see Matthew get a coveted slot on the bill.
Speaking from Portugal during last-minute preparations for the wedding, Denise said: “We are very excited, but so proud of Matt. Obviously he is gutted to miss the wedding, but he has his dad there to support him. We’re hoping that Mick might send us a message!”
Guests began arriving at the resort towards the end of last week to enjoy some fun in the sun before the formalities began on Saturday afternoon.
Former Coronation Street actresses and longtime friends of the bride, Jill Halfpenny and Angie Lonsdale were there – Angie was one of the four bridesmaids – while other guests at the hotel ceremony included Denise’s Loose Women colleagues past and present Carol McGiffin, Lisa Maxwell, Shobna Gulati, Kate Thornton, Zoe Tyler, Jackie Brambles and Andrea McClean.
Entertainers Christopher Biggins and The Krankies were also in the congregation while Hustle actor Marc Warren took the role of joint best man with 40-year-old Lincoln’s son, Lewis.
Although Denise and Lincoln have sold their wedding coverage to Hello! magazine, the 55-year-old actress told us yesterday: “It was a magical day surrounded by friends and family in beautiful surroundings.”
Denise was given away by her dad, Vin while her youngest son, 12-year-old Louis, was an usher. Before the ceremony, Vin said: “I’m delighted to be giving Denise away to Lincoln in such a beautiful setting in front of so many family and friends.”
Meanwhile, Angie said she was thrilled to have been asked to perform bridesmaid duties. She said: “Denise is so loved by everyone so I know what a hard decision that must have been to pick only four (bridesmaids).
“I am so honoured and proud. I’m feeling very emotional seeing Denise so happy.”
After the ceremony, Angie used social networking site, twitter, to reveal she had been a “weepy bridesmaid” before tweeting to the happy couple: “@RealDeniseWelch @LincolnTownley that was not only the best day of your lives it was ours too ! #stillveryemotional”.
Meanwhile the new Mr and Mrs Townley also tweeted their happiness to the world.
Lincoln tweeted: “I married the woman of my dreams....@RealDeniseWelch” while Denise added yesterday afternoon: “Just landed home. Jet setter Louis off to Paris and we’re off on honeymoon!! Thank you all our lovely friends and family. Unforgettable xxx”.
