Delays as fatal crash closes the A1

The A1 was closed for almost three hours last night after a fatal car crash in Northumberland.

An HGV and a car collided at about 5.45pm on the northbound carriageway near Hampeth, Shilbottle, near Alnwick.

Police officers, fire crews, paramedics and a rescue helicopter raced the scene but could not save one of the passengers in the car.

The dual carriageway was sealed off by police as commuters were diverted through Shilbottle.

Fire crews from Alnwick, Amble and Morpeth were all called to the scene and helped remove one of the injured people from the wreckage.

The road reopened to traffic at about 8.30pm after accident investigators completed their examination of the scene.

Witnesses to yesterday's crash are asked to call Northumbria Police on 08456 043043.
