Sunderland's new lifeboat will arrive at the Wearside station on Friday.
The Atlantic 85 class inshore lifeboat will be named Wolseley after a national plumbing company which is sponsoring the boat. It is larger, faster and better equipped than Sunderland's existing Atlantic 75 lifeboat.
Durham University is to award honorary degrees to leading figures in the worlds of engineering, anthropology, criminal justice and wildlife documentary-making.
Durham graduate Alastair Fothergill is amongst those to be honoured at the ceremony, alongside the eminent engineer Lord Broers, leading Judge Navanethem Pillay and anthropologist Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern. The ceremonies, which will take place on June 27 and 29, are to be held in Durham Cathedral.
Policed in Wallsend are offering free purse alarms to shoppers in a bid to reduce thefts.
The purses will be given away at the Mall on Segedunum Way on Thursday from 9.30am until lunchtime.
