Your exclusive beauty column from Mac Cosmetics’ senior make-up artist, Sunderland-born Caroline Donnelly.
SUNDAY morning I had a call from American Vogue. I was assisting make-up artist Mathias Vann Hoof for a feature on women’s wear designer Jonathan Saunders.
The look was really natural for the shoot, which featured the designer, some of his crew and model of the moment Agyness Deyn. Mathias and the crew were lovely, but it was the coldest studio I have EVER worked in.
The next morning I arrived at another studio to do a “caterpillar to butterfly” photo shoot, this time the studio at least has a gas heater! The model is on time and extremely pretty.
The make-up changes every couple of shots, until the final two when she emerges as the butterfly. I’ve included photographs from this final look.
Thursday I make my way to the O2 Centre in Greenwich. Kanye West is starting the first leg of his tour here, so I go along to design the make-up. After a discussion with the costume designer and Kanye, the orchestra members’ make-up is designed and approved and is EASY and quick. Result!!!
Then I design a female singer named Joi’s make-up. She is up for having some full-on make up. I love it! I have Full Fuchsia MAC Pro, www.macpro.com, blusher and Devil MAC Pro blusher around a black winged out eye. On top of the Blacktrack Fluidline is Black Tied eye shadow. I chop up big black lashes into tendrils and apply under the eye and apply a bright pink shadow underneath this.
Q. Is there a good product to combat shiny skin during the day, I get it on my T-Zone?
A. There are some simple steps to help you keep shine free throughout the day.
Firstly, let’s start with your skin care routine as this is all important. Cleansing your face with a product which is correct for your skin type will help keep the sebum (oil) production under control, getting to the core of the problem.
My skin is very similar to yours and I love using MAC Green Gel Cleanser as a face wash every morning and night as it helps to take care of the problem without drying it out. Next, you need a moisturiser which is perfect for you. A lot of people buy skincare on a friend’s recommendation. But think, “is my skin exactly the same as my friend’s?” The chances are – no! Every individual has different needs. If your skin is really oily and normal to oily on the rest of your face, MAC’s Oil Control Lotion is great for you for use all over the face. This will add hydration as well as calm the oil down. Natural exfoliants help improve texture and clarity.
If your skin is slightly dry in the areas other than your T-zone, I’d recommend a combination of products. Use the Oil Control Lotion over the T-zone and use a more hydrating moisturiser in the dry areas. I especially like Studio Moisture Cream.
If you prefer a lighter moisturiser, try Studio Moisture Fix. This has a no-grease formula that helps prep the skin for make-up, then helps it stay.
MAC do a large choice of foundations for you to choose from. The best advice I can give you is to go to a MAC counter and try on the type you are looking for.
Finally, you may want to powder your nose during the day, so get some MAC Blot powder, or carry some MAC Blot Film. Blot powder is an easy to carry around, pressed powder designed primarily to provide shine control without adding any noticeable colour or texture. Perfect after applying your make-up, it sets foundation and finishes the face.
MAC Blot film is a non make-up alternative. This handy carry blot leaves skin oil-free, mega-matte. Won’t remove or alter make-up.
