A leisure resort in the region has been named as one of the UK’s top 10 luxury hotels.

Rockliffe Hall, in Hurworth-on-Tees, County Durham, was placed eighth in a list of the best luxury resorts in the TripAdvisor 2014 Travellers’ Choice awards.

The top spot went to the Chester Residence in Edinburgh, followed by Gidleigh Park Hotel in Chagford, and Coworth Park in Ascot.

Now in their 12th year, the awards honour the world’s most outstanding properties in the categories of top hotels, bargain, B&Bs and inns, family, luxury, romance, and small hotels.

The winners were determined based on the reviews and opinions of millions of TripAdvisor travellers around the globe.

Nick Holmes, managing director of Rockliffe Hall, was pleased with the result.

He said: “The last 12 months have been incredibly challenging for many establishments in the hospitality sector as the marketplace gets ever more competitive. This is the third time that Rockliffe Hall has been recognised by the Traveller’s Choice Awards so it’s encouraging to see that we are consistently rated so highly by the people that really matter – our guests.

“This is a great accolade to take with us as we go into our fifth year which promises further developments across our resort.”

The award results have revealed that 15 of the world’s 25 best B&Bs can be found in Britain.

The top two B&Bs are both in the UK. First place went to Bindon Bottom, in West Lulworth, a village in Dorset. And the All Seasons Guest House in the seaside resort of Filey, North Yorkshire, was placed second on the list.

In the UK awards, the Milestone Hotel in London was named as the country’s top hotel. It also ranked 15 in the world among the best hotels.

While London again scooped the most awards of any UK town or city, it was smaller seaside towns that generally outshone the larger cities – with Torquay, St Ives and Blackpool all landing more awards than anywhere else outside the capital.

Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, said: “We’re excited to recognize the world’s best properties, based on the opinions of those who know them best – the millions of travellers around the globe who come to TripAdvisor to share their experiences.

“For those seeking inspiration for their 2014 travel planning, this list of spectacular accommodations that received 2014 Travellers’ Choice awards is a perfect place to start.”

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof, in Pontresina, Switzerland, claimed the coveted title of world’s top hotel.
