The crews from West Denton and Gosforth were called to the semi-detached house in Whitethorn Crescent in the city's Cowgate area just before 8.30am.

A bedroom was badly damaged in the blaze, but no-one was hurt.

Home to shut

NORTHUMBERLAND County Council's Oaklands House old people's home in Prudhoe is to close, it was agreed yesterday.

The closure has been on the cards for some time and the final residents moved out of the home last week. Talks are continuing on the future of 27 staff who work there.

Stub it out

PEOPLE in County Durham are being urged to bring their smoking habits to book to mark national No Smoking Day tomorrow.

Information on giving up cigarettes and NHS Stop Smoking Services will be available from the county's libraries. Until the end of March, Durham County Council is also offering people the chance to borrow and reserve for free, library books which promote healthy and active lifestyles as part of its Spring into Health campaign.

Verges pledge

PEOPLE in Bedlington have voiced their anger over damage caused to verges and pavements during recent roadworks.

They say the work to resurface part of the A1068 road near Hartlands has caused havoc because of indiscriminate parking of plant vehicles. Wansbeck Council has taken up the complaints with county council officers, who say all damage will be put right by the contractors.

Crime worry

AN MP has admitted he is worried about the continuing rise in the number of raids on cash and valuables in vehicles and the increased levels of violence and use of weapons in these attacks.

Fraser Kemp, member for Houghton and Washington East, has backed a Commons motion calling for a review of the law.

Eggs contest

YOUTH group members from North Tyneside have been busy decorating eggs for an annual design competition.

The Easter Egg competition, which is being run by Beaver, Cub and Scout organisations based in Whitley Bay, will be judged on March 24. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as well as their families are eligible to enter the competition.
