A decision by councillors to refuse plans for a controversial betting shop in South Shields has been overturned by planning inspectors.
South Tyneside Council had blocked the Coral Ltd from redeveloping GK Lee, Fowler Street, in a effort to keep the site in the retail sector. Coral's appeal was successful and the redevelopment will now go ahead. Coun John Anglin said: "This decision is against the interests of the people of South Shields."
Pupils at Clover Hill Primary School, in Whickham, Gateshead, will move into a new £380,000 extension in the new year.
The extension will give the school two new teaching areas, one equipped with a kitchen and IT facilities. The school entrance has been repaved and a new car park created.
The only working windmill in the North-East needs helpers to keep it running.

A fifth wind farm development is being considered for the Berwick district.
The firm of Renewable Energy Systems are understood to be in the preliminary stages of investigating a site at Murton Crags, near Longridge Towers School west of Berwick, with a view to applying to Berwick Borough Council for permission to erect up to ten turbines.
