Around 4,800 homes and business at Berwick in Northumberland can now enjoy access to the high speed technology which is being rolled out across the county in a multi-million pound project.
The number of properties to benefit is set to increase to nearly 6,400 as engineers install the technology in the weeks ahead.
The arrival of the technology was yesterday welcomed by Berwick Chamber of Trade.
Chairman John Haswell said: “Super-fast fibre broadband in Berwick offers huge benefits to local residents and businesses and will help our local economy to flourish.
“Faster broadband speeds can boost competitiveness allowing businesses to promote and build a better, more effective online presence.
“Whether it’s a hotel being able to offer a full online booking system or a café giving customers free Wi-Fi, better, faster communications help businesses to grow and stimulate job creation.
“This is great news and I look forward to fibre broadband being rolled out across the rest of Berwick upon Tweed.”
The project, iNorthumberland, is an £18.9m partnership involving BT, Northumberland County Council and Arch, The Northumberland Development Company.
It will see 95% of Northumberland homes and businesses given access to speeds of up to 80Mbps by 2016.
Under current iNorthumberland plans, Belford, Chathill, Crookham, Seahouses and Wooler are set to benefit during 2014 with further locations in Berwick to follow in 2015.
Simon Robertson, BT’s North East regional partnership director, said: “Our roll-out of fibre broadband is advancing across Northumberland with Berwick the latest place to benefit.
“More than 2.4 million homes and businesses across the UK are already using Openreach’s new fibre network via a range of retailers, bringing speed and choice to the UK.
“Many local businesses and residents in Berwick now have the opportunity to join them.
“Whatever you’re doing online, you can do it better and faster with fibre. Whether it’s shopping, downloading music and video, watching TV, social networking, studying or researching homework, once you’ve switched to fibre you’ll never look back.
“Businesses tell us it’s helping them in a wealth of ways, from day to day activities like downloading software, and moving large data files around to big business decisions like expanding the workforce or introducing better quality IT services at less cost.
“Thousands of residents and businesses in Berwick now have the opportunity to find out for themselves why there’s such a buzz about fibre broadband.”
