Motorists in a remote Northumberland village are celebrating after a petrol pump was saved from closure.
Villagers from Bellingham faced having to travel miles to the nearest petrol pump after Bellingham Garage Services was left to decline when the owner retired.
Now new owner Brian Turner has stepped in and reopened the garage after a £60,000 refurbishment scheme.
Mr Turner said: “When I heard that the community of Bellingham was on the brink of losing its only petrol pump for miles I was keen to prevent this from happening.
“I had visited the garage a few times before and always thought it had the potential to be a really successful business and I remember jokingly telling the previous owner that I’d buy it if he ever sold up.
“When he told me he was looking to do just that I immediately drew up some plans for a modernisation of the premises.”
The garage now boasts new offices, a MOT reception area and a new workshop.
Plans are also in place to purchase an additional petrol pump and an electric car battery charger has already been installed on site.
Mr Turner added: “We continue to service older cars and rural vehicles such as Land Rovers, but we have also had some classic cars and older vehicles brought in for a service.
“Everyone in the workshop has received training to service the range of vehicles and we’re doing such a good job that people are travelling from even the wider city areas to bring their cars to us.
“We recently had a 1935 hand-restored Bugatti brought into us. The owner had put diesel into it which caused all sorts of problems so we took it out and cleaned the entire engine for them.
By servicing every make and model of vehicle and continuing to provide a personal, dependable community service we are providing a much needed service locally and beyond.”
The garage has been accepted on to the Trust My Garage scheme, which carries out audits on all approved member garages.
Terry Gibson, from the scheme, said: “Bellingham Garage Services is a fantastic example of a local independent garage, relied upon by thousands in the local community.
“Independent garages are important resources that residents trust to provide an honest and quality service regularly.
“The fact that a change in ownership has not only saved a valuable community resource but helped the garage to expand its local presence is fantastic news.
And we are really pleased to welcome them as a member of Trust My Garage.”
