The assault took place at about 3pm at Citygate in Gallowgate. A 32-year-old man was arrested.

Police are asking witnesses to call (0191) 214-6555.

Down drain

THIEVES are putting lives at risk by ripping out roadside drain covers in County Durham.

A total of 173 gully covers have been stolen for scrap since March 24. Anyone who sees suspicious activity in relation to gully covers is asked to contact police on 0845 606-0365.

Transport plans

PLANS for the development of transport schemes in Carlisle will come under scrutiny next month.

Starting on September 11 residents will have two weeks to make comments either at a drop-in exhibition at the Old Town Hall or at a public meeting on September 19 at Carlisle Civic Centre.

Internet help

A RECENT study has shown that teachers in Newcastle believe the internet helps pupils.

Nine out of 10 teachers believe pupils who don't have the internet at home are at a disadvantage. A total of 563 teachers were questioned across the UK as part of the survey.
