It’s hard to believe that the region’s best-preserved Roman site could be ruined by development.
That certainly seems to be the fear of the Auckland Castle Trust as they analyse plans by the Church Commissioners for the sale of plots of land at Binchester Roman Town.
The trust acknowledges that the settlement itself could not be developed – but says the sale could hamper archaeologists’ work and public access.
The Commissioners were at pains to point out that such fears were groundless. However, they have not convinced the trust and very clearly will have their work cut out in doing so.
This looks like an issue that everyone, and especially Durham County Council, should keep their eye on.
