VOLUNTEERS at a Northumberland lifeboat station have said thank you after their biggest event of the year raised more than £2,400 for the RNLI.

Hundreds of people attended the annual Newbiggin-by-the-Sea Lifeboat Day at the boathouse three weeks ago.

The afternoon event included stalls run by the Ladies Lifeboat Guild, music, displays and a chance to meet lifeboat crew members.

Yesterday, lifeboat station press officer Richard Martin said it had marked 160 years of lifesaving operations in the town. He said: “On behalf of Newbiggin RNLI station, I would like to send out a really big thank you to everybody for making the event such a great success.

“This is an established event in the community calendar, with many months of work put in by all of the volunteer team to make it happen.

“Many thanks also to the hundreds who came along despite the changeable weather to support us.

“It was greatly appreciated.”

Fundraising continues on August 29 with a car boot sale next to the lifeboat station from 10am to 4pm.
