This five-bedroom home has been a perfect place for Diane Blackshaw to live for the past 10 years.
With spacious reception rooms and a self-contained annex, the impressive stone-built property in Alnwick, Northumberland, provides versatile family accommodation in the village of Lesbury.
With her daughter about to fly the nest, Diane is now looking to downsize and has put the characterful three-storey home on the market.
“It’s a proper family house and when we first viewed it 10 years ago we walked in and just thought ‘wow, this is it!” said Diane. “The rooms are all really good sizes. It’s ideally suited to family life and perfectly located. The River Aln runs at the bottom of the garden and it’s just lovely to sit next to it on a sunny day.
“We are only two minutes from the beach and five minutes from the train station, so it’s ideal for commuting. Lesbury is just a lovely village. It’s got a nice pub and it’s only five minutes from Alnwick. While you’re still out in the country, you are close enough to plenty of amenities too. It’s about 30-40 minutes down to Newcastle and the Metrocentre, so you can get around extremely easily.”
The property is approached via an electric gated entrance with a high stone wall boundary which allows for a high degree of privacy. There is a block paved circular driveway with a landscaped central garden.
Key features include an unusual conservatory which has a mezzanine gallery area accessed via a spiral staircase and a cinema room with a 9ft screen, a wall-mounted projector and raised seating. Other characteristics include sash windows, focal fireplaces, ceiling coving and french doors.
The self-contained annex, on the lower ground floor, includes an en suite bedroom, a living room and a small kitchen, and is ideal for a teenager or elderly relative needing their own space.
To the ground floor is a beautifully spacious reception hallway with four sets of glazed French doors opening up to four reception rooms; a formal sitting room, a formal dining room, a living room with access to the kitchen and conservatory, and a games room which has a sound system and overlooks the rear courtyard.
There is also a cloakroom, a breakfasting kitchen with an AGA and utility/boot room. An impressively large master bedroom with dressing room and luxury ensuite bathroom, and three further en suite double bedrooms are to the first floor.
“It’s a big house and there is plenty of space,” said Diane. “I have many favourite parts of the house. The conservatory is a one off though. It’s just a lovely, peaceful part of the house which looks out onto the garden.”
There is a south-facing and well-maintained garden with well-stocked borders and a pretty stone pathway giving access to the front door. To the side of the property there is a secluded and private garden, and a number of mature trees.
The River Aln runs along the bottom of the garden. An attached double garage provides storage into the roof space and a large block paved courtyard provides private parking for several cars.
Diane explains: “I think this property would be perfect for a large family because we’ve got the annex downstairs. I love it here but it’s just too big now that my daughter has got her own place and is flying the nest.”
