A TEAM of fundraisers are hiking along the Grand Canyon to raise money for a local hospice.

The team of 39 will hike to raise money for Marie Curie’s Newcastle hospice, which provides free care for people living with cancer and other illnesses.

Many of the team have witnessed the hospice’s work first-hand.

Katie Johnson, 24, from Cramlington, is taking part with her fiance in memory of Katie’s mother who was cared for in the hospice before she passed away in 2009. Katie said: “I wanted to give something back to Marie Curie and support them as much as I can.”

The Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Grand Canyon USA trek will include a range of challenging hikes, as the group descend deep into the canyon, which will take them through a Native American village and past rocky terraces. The more adventurous trekkers will even swim and jump from waterfalls.
