FAMILIES took a trip back through time this weekend.

Visitors to a former Roman Fort were catapulted nearly 2,000 years through history as a legion of Centurions showed off their skills.

Housesteads Roman Fort near Bardon Mill in Northumberland was transformed as members of the VIII Legion re-enactment group hosted demonstrations of battle tactics and showed off their weapons and uniforms.

Youngsters visiting the historic site were also able to take part in practice drills and quiz the re-enactment enthusiasts about what life would have been like for soldiers posted at one of the farthest-flung corners of the Roman Empire.
