ASHINGTON schoolchildren greeted the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh on their trip to Northumberland.

The Queen was accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Northumberland in her role as Lord Lieutenant, on her visit to Alnwick last week which included officially opening the new youth hostel in the town.

Four pupils from the Northumberland Church of England Academy waited nervously to meet Her Majesty and His Royal Highness Prince Phillip to tell them about their time at the hostel after being the first group use the facilities as part of the Star Programme Social Enterprise.

Bethany Miller, Rebecca Langley, Matthew Gagie and Ryan King, all Year Seven pupils at the school in Ashington, were asked about their experience at the hostel by The Queen and Prince Philip.

Helen Allis, teacher at the school and organiser of the programme said: “It has been a very exciting time over the last couple of weeks and meeting the Queen is such an honour.”

This was the Queen’s first visit since 2001 when she visited Morpeth and Berwick.
