Northern Architecture is launching Architecture Week 2007 on Thursday with an exclusive film preview at the Tyneside Cinema.
The cinema, which is currently in its temporary home of the Old Town Hall, Gateshead, will be the place to see the first UK screening of Sydney Pollack's acclaimed documentary about architect Frank O Gehry.
Sketches of Frank Gehry is Pollack's candid portrait of his lifelong friend. It shows how Gehry's designs blur the line between architecture and art through examples of his work, including The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
Northern Architecture Week Co-ordinator Carine Aguet said: "The Tyneside Cinema is an ideal backdrop for the launch of Architecture Week 2007.
"Not only was its original base on Pilgrim Street designed and built by local film entrepreneur Dixon Scott, its temporary home at Gateshead Old Town Hall maximises on original Victorian features like its stage and balcony. Such atmospheric surroundings can only add to the architectural resonance of the film."
Architecture Week 2007 - the annual national celebration of contemporary architecture - is taking place across the North-East from June 15 to 24. This year's theme is How Green is our Space? and focuses on critical issues of climate change and sustainability. As well as film screenings, events will include talks, walks, tours, building visits, exhibitions and children's activities. Most of the events are free.
Carine said: "The schedule for this year's Architecture Week is bigger and better than ever and this is only one of a series of events taking place throughout the region.
"We hope that as many people as possible join us at the Tyneside Cinema for this fantastic opportunity to catch a glimpse into the mindset and work of this cutting-edge architect of his time."
The launch is at Tyneside Cinema on Thursday. Doors open at 6pm and there will be an introduction to the film and Architecture Week before the screening of Sketches of Frank Gehry. A reception with refreshments will follow. Tickets can be bought direct from Tyneside Cinema's box office on (0191) 232-8289 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
