Grumpy Old Women Live at Newcastle Theatre Royal

DO YOU tut at everything that annoys you? Like people who put their feet up on public transport or having to pay £3 for a cappuccino? Do empty milk cartons in the fridge really make your blood boil?

If you answered yes to any of these, then you would have enjoyed laughing at yourself at this Theatre Royal one-nighter.

Even from a grumpy young woman’s point of view it was absolutely hilarious to find out exactly what I will be like when I reach my middle years.

The cast consisted of former Bond girl Britt Ekland, former Coronation Street actress Denise Black and full-time grumpy old woman Dillie Keane.

The three women directed all their female-only jokes to an audience of women. The odd man who had undoubtedly been dragged along by his wife probably sat wishing he wasn’t there.

A list of things that make grumpy old women grumpy were given – all of which were completely true. The lady next to me spent the entire interval telling me how she was exactly like the three women on the stage, and that I would be exactly like them when I was older.

Handbags, teenage children and the mother-in-law were amongst three of the most popular topics of the evening.

Apparently the whole content of your life is carried around in your handbag, and most women seem to reach the point when they realise they are turning into their mother. And start saying things like: “In my day…”

The show was spot on and had every female member of the audience in absolute hysterics throughout.
