The all-rounder will take up the title role of Dr Dolittle, at Sunderland Empire from November 9 to December 1, with tickets on sale from today.

Steele has appeared in hit films like The Happiest Millionaire, Finian’s Rainbow and the acclaimed Half A Sixpence, which he also performed in the West End and on Broadway.

Steele will return to the stage alongside a huge company of singers, dancers and puppeteers in the new production of Leslie Bricusse’s family hit musical Dr Dolittle.

“I could walk with the animals, talk with the animals, grunt and squeak and squawk with the animals... and they could talk to me,” laughs Tommy Steele.

Dr Dolittle is at the Sunderland Empire from Monday November 19 to Saturday December 1.

Tickets costing £11 to £33.50 are on sale now and available from the 24-hour box office on 0870 602 1130 and online at www.SunderlandEmpire.org.uk.
