The 'Modfather' will help a Tyneside coastal festival mark its tenth anniversary in style.

Veteran musician Paul Weller will take to the stage as this year’s headline act at the Mouth of the Tyne Festival at Tynemouth Priory and Castle.

The Jam and Style Council frontman is the first artist to be announced by organisers of the weekend event for Saturday, July 12.

The 55-year-old is set to make a number of festival appearances this summer and will keep fans happy by playing a selection of material from all 11 of his top-10 albums.

Meanwhile, it was announced that fellow British favourites Echo and the Bunnymen announced they will bring their tour to Newcastle in May.

The Liverpudlian rock group will play at the city’s Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre on May 13.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside, Norma Redfearn, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Paul Weller to our tenth anniversary festival and can’t wait to see him in action – it’s a great way to celebrate 10 years of live music and entertainment at one of North Tyneside’s most iconic locations.”

A sharp-dressing star who has been a hugely successful solo artist since the early 1990s, Paul Weller released his latest album Sonik Kicks in 2012.

Previous big name acts at the Mouth of the Tyne Festival include The Script, James Morrison, Beverley Knight, Scouting For Girls, McFly, The Human League and The Wanted.

The annual event is organised by North Tyneside Council and supported by Port of Tyne, Kier and TyneMet College. Tickets cost £40 each plus a booking fee and go on sale from www.ticketmaster.co.uk at 9am on Thursday morning.
