When it comes to soul music, there’s no argument about whether Gladys Knight qualifies as royalty.
And so it was only fitting that the Empress of Soul received an en masse standing ovation from the assembled - and sold out audience - at Sage Gateshead on Saturday night.
And she hadn’t even sung a note.
Everyone was on their feet to welcome the 72-year-old singer (although she was 71 when she played the gig, having celebrated her birthday on Sunday) - and the lady herself was truly humbled by the warm North East reception.
Even after all these years it was clear that this is a girl who has still got it - and loves having it.
Female artists of this generation could learn a lot from this multi-Grammy-Award-winning legend, who obviously still adores what she does and continues to do it on another level.
From her golden greats, new single and covers from the back catalogues of Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and Barbra Streisand among others, a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. Not least Gladys herself.
