Stage and screen star Jason Donovan is returning to his roots for a solo tour that will bring him to Gateshead and Carlisle in March next year.
The Aussie performer will embark on 20 dates to perform his 1989 debut album, Ten Good Reasons, along with his greatest hits.
Jason became a household name in the 1980s as Scott in imported ‘soap’ Neighbours.
On the back of its enormous popularity – 20 million viewers at its peak – both he and Kylie Minogue, who played his on-screen sweetheart Charlene, later rode to pop music success.
Kylie left Neighbours first. Jason followed in 1989 although his first single, Nothing Can Divide Us, was released the previous year.
Both singers relied on material provided by Stock Aitken Waterman. Jason’s second single was a duet with Kylie, Especially for You, which hit the number one spot in January 1989. Ten Good Reasons came out in May 1989 and also went to number one.
Jason became the first Australian male ever to hold both the number one UK single and album chart positions at the same time. Between 1988 and 1992 he achieved 16 top 40 hit singles in the UK.
Announcing the tour, Jason said: “You know, I’ve never played some of these songs live ever before.”
He added: “Ten Good Reasons was a defining moment for me and my fans. It was the perfect marriage between music and personality. I was 21 at the time.”
Since Neighbours and chart success, Jason has made his professional home inmusical theatre, appearing in such shows as ‘Joseph’, The Rocky Horror Show and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. He also presents a Sunday show on Heart Radio.
Jason will perform at the Sands Centre, Carlisle, on March 5, 2016 (01228 633766 or www.thesandscentre.co.uk) and Sage Gateshead on March 6 (0191 4434661 or www.sagegateshead.com) . Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday, May 15.
