Well-known North East chocolatier Gareth Mellor’s new venture in Morpeth has been officially opened by the town’s mayor.

Councillor Nic Best was on hand to cut the ribbon at the Gareth James chocolate shop and café lounge in Sanderson Arcade.

Gareth – James is his middle name - opened the Morpeth outlet in April. But the 24 year old and his team have spent the last three months preparing the upstairs café lounge with just the bespoke chocolate department open for business.

With the opening of the café Gareth, who already runs a successful chocolate shop and café in Tynemouth, has extended his repertoire to a brunch and lunch menu and afternoon tea alongside the handmade confectionery.

The young chocolatier has built up an enviable reputation in the region for his delicious chocolates – which include unusual flavours like gin and tonic, Newcastle Brown Ale and orange blossom water - and cakes and says he is delighted to have the opportunity to expand.

“We have been really well received in the town and everyone on the team is really excited now to have the whole business open after so many weeks and months of planning,” he says.

The café lounge is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, while the chocolate shop is open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm.
