Gateshead’s Six restaurant is celebrating its sixth birthday in February with a host of celebratory events and menus inspired by the most memorable cuisine served up by its kitchen team since the rooftop venue opened in 2009.

Six is located on the top floor of Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.

Run by North East hospitality operator Fresh Element, its modern, seasonal and predominantly regionally sourced British cuisine, coupled with its location, has won the venue many plaudits.

These include the 2013 best restaurant at the Benevolent Awards, as voted for by the public, and last year’s runner-up spot in the Observer Food Monthly Awards.

Now the team is delving through its menu archive and getting out the party poppers with a week of revelries between February 1-6 to mark its birthday.

The celebrations get underway on day one with a special Six is Six Afternoon Tea (£14.95) with a birthday twist, which will be on offer throughout the week.

Served between 2.30pm and 3.30pm daily, it features miniature versions of the eatery’s favourite puddings from the past six years alongside finger sandwiches and scones with jam and clotted cream.

Launching on February 2, the Birthday À La Carte draws inspiration from Six’s menus throughout the years and features six starters, mains and desserts from the archive selected by the venue’s diners over the festive period.

February 3 sees a special VIP Birthday Event Competition with tickets available to win on the Sixbaltic Facebook page.

On February 4 there’s a cocktail evening (£60 per person) which will see six mixologists joining the chef team to match drinks to a three-course menu.

A wine and dinner evening hosted by Taittinger UK director Kevin McKee will be held on February 5. Hand-picked wines will be matched to a six course menu (£60 per person).

February 6 marks the restaurant’s official birthday.

To mark the occasion guests are invited to don their best party gear and head to Six for a seven course taster menu with matching wines (£66 per person or £96 with the wine pairing).
