Here in the North East, we’re big fans of one of the country’s best loved foods – the classic British sandwich. And British Sandwich Week 2015, which takes place between May 10 and 16, provides the perfect opportunity to try out some new fillings to liven up your lunch or to sample a tasty sandwich from a local eatery.
Our appreciation of the sandwich is stronger than ever, with a staggering 10 billion of them either purchased or made at home in the UK every year, and the BLT came out on top in a 2014 survey to find the nation’s favourite.
One of the North East venues celebrating British Sandwich Week is Sage Gateshead, which has designed a special menu that will run from May 12.
Laura Kane, Catering Operations Manager explains: “This year, our talented chefs have created a number of sandwiches that have been named to coincide with the concerts we have on each day.
“For example, on Thursday, when we’ll welcome the Royal Northern Sinfonia, we’ll be serving the ‘Strauss Serenade for Winds’, a ploughman’s sandwich with ham, smoked Northumberland cheese and pickle, and the ‘Schubert Overture: in the British sandwich style’, a brioche bun with bacon, sausage and fried egg, served with hash browns and beans.
“Then, on Friday, when Lulu will be performing, the ‘Oh Me Oh My’ Geordie chip butty will feature, with hand-cut chips and Newcastle brown ale gravy served on stottie bread.
“Rounding things off on Saturday, which sees the Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle come to the Sage, you will be able to choose from either a smoked salmon, beetroot, caper and dill mayo sandwich or a proper fish finger sandwich.
“We hope that there’s something on our themed menu that all our visitors will enjoy, and look forward to a great week full of music and sandwiches!”
As it’s one of the nation’s favourite fillings, Sage Gateshead is of course also offering the classic BLT, served on Geordie Bakers bloomer bread.
Also celebrating British Sandwich Week is the Northumberland Cheese Company, which is inviting visitors to enter a competition and get creative with cheese.
Charlie Pears-Wallace, from the Blagdon-based company, said: “After its roaring success last year, we will again be running a fun British Sandwich Week competition between May 10 and 16.
“All you need to do to get involved is invent a sandwich using our cheese – whether your favourite is our Chilli, Cheviot or Blagdon Blue – and give your entry in at our Cheese Loft Café. The more creative the better!
“The lucky winner will not only be invited to try their creation, but will also see their sandwich featured on our specials menu for the following week.”
