Newcastle restaurant Blackfriars is banishing the January blues by firing up a special deal for diners.

The eatery – said to be the oldest purpose-built restaurant in Britain, dating back to 1239 when it served as the refectory for the Dominican Friars - is treating customers to a ‘buy one lunch, get one half price’ offer Mondays to Fridays this month.

The offer is valid for advance lunchtime bookings only, when ordering two or three courses each from the set menu.

Andy Hook, owner of Blackfriars, says: “We’re looking forward to kicking off 2015 by treating our diners to our hearty winter lunches, which provide the perfect pick-me-up for those recovering from the stress of the festive season.”

Blackfriars –which serves traditional British food using seasonal, local produce – received the Taste of England accolade in the North East England Tourism Awards and was voted Best North East Restaurant in the Licensed Trade Awards 2014.

The January meal deal excludes drinks and cannot be used in conjunction with other offers, such as Newcastle Restaurant Week, running between January 19-23.
