Sound the Octo-alert! Captain Barnacles and the rest of the Octonauts crew will be docking in Durham this spring - and they’re bringing a deep sea volcano with them.

We are imagining that will be quite the truck which is parked outside the Gala Theatre during the weekend of April 11 and 12.

The prospect of a real-life stage production bringing the stars of the popular CBeebies series to life will doubtless provoke much hysteria among it young army of fans.

I know it has in our house, but if you’re unfamiliar with the show, let me bring you up to speed.

The Octonauts are a dynamic eight-member team of quirky and courageous adventure heroes who dive into action whenever there is trouble under the sea.

Equipped with a fleet of aquatic vehicles, they rescue amazing sea creatures (with a fantastic range of accents), explore incredible new underwater worlds, and often save the day before returning safely to their home base, the octopod.

The theatrical incarnation of the show is coming courtesy of top notch children’s theatre producers Fiery Light, who have been responsible for bringing other children’s favourites Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, LazyTown Live! and Roald Dahl’s The BFG to the live arena with much success.

They are promising a full-length stage adventure, featuring the aforementioned deep sea volcano and much more besides.

For the first time, audiences will be treated to a visit from the entire crew of the Octonauts, led by intrepid explorer Captain Barnacles, Lieutenant Kwazii and Medic Peso, as they embark on an exciting new underwater quest and visit amazing underwater worlds full of adventure, with surprises around every corner.

Action-packed and interactive to boot, the production also features original music from BAFTA-award winning composer Mani Svavarsson.

Director Richard Lewis says: “Octonauts is all about adventure and exploration which offers up a whole host of possibilities in a live environment.

“From the colourful characters and fantastic underwater setting to the amazing octopod where the Octonauts live, there’s great scope for a unique, interactive theatre experience. We can’t wait to take fans on an adventure like never before.”
