Families descended on Gateshead's Saltwell Park for the opening of annual arts adventure Enchanted Parks

Families descended on a Gateshead park for the start of an annual after-dark arts-based adventure.

Parents and their children were at Saltwell Park for the opening night of NewcastleGateshead Initiative and Gateshead Council’s Enchanted Parks 2014.

This year’s event tells the story of Estella, a young girl who lived inside Saltwell Towers. Fascinated by the stars that shone brightly above her, to Estella the turrets of Saltwell Towers became her very own observatory.

Would her dreams of travelling into space become a reality? Her quest to be among the stars brings some out-of-this-world surprises to Saltwell Park.

Enchanted Parks sees artists from the North East and across the country transform Saltwell Park into a magical arts adventure.

Students and young people from the region have played a part in this year’s event, giving them a unique opportunity to showcase their work alongside established artists.

More than 21,000 people are expected to visit Enchanted Parks before it ends on Sunday.

Carol Bell, head of culture and major events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “We’ve been inspired by the stars and the night sky around us.

“It’s going to be another really magical experience for the visitors.”
