Mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington will be talking at Durham’s Gala Theatre later this month, having postponed a scheduled appearance in October due to a back injury.

Sir Chris, who began climbing at the age of 16, has undertaken 19 Himalayan expeditions including four to Mount Everest.

Now aged 80, he doesn’t appear to have eased up too much. Last summer he climbed the Old Man of Hoy in the Orkneys.

Sir Chris has made a living from mountains – either climbing them or talking and writing about them – since leaving Unilever after nine months. He had joined a division of the company after leaving the Army.

The LIfe & Times of Sir Chris Bonington will feature photos and film footage. Supported by Berghaus and Cotswold Outdoor, it takes place at the Gala on January 25. Tickets: 03000 266600 or www.galadurham.co.uk
