BEST EVENT TEES VALLEY Winner - Modern Times at mima
THE Modern Times was a project designed to coincide with mima’s inaugural Artists’ Rooms exhibition from Gerhard Richter.
In May 2009, mima invited young people from across Tees Valley, with interests spanning photography, fine art, journalism, design and fashion, to create a 12-page colour newspaper which would be distributed to 48,000 homes and which would act as the main interpretation tool to viewing and experiencing the collection on show in the gallery.
Through talking to educators, artists, curators, designers and gallery staff from a range of venues, they concluded that Gerhard’s influence was universal and long-lasting, with the final publication including articles on fashion and art, food and art, music, artist interviews and exhibition reviews.
FINALIST – Odin’s Glow
Odin’s glow was an outdoor event which saw more than 10,000 people make their way to Newton under Roseberry over four nights in October.
The charming village was transformed into an enchanting landscape to be explored, with music, visual art, dance, performances and light, celebrating the myths and legends of Norse god, Odin, all under the illuminated peak of Roseberry Topping.
FINALIST – The Story Engine 2009
Formerly known as The Northern Screenwriters’ Conference, The Story Engine took place at Darlington Arts Centre in February. With a reputation for bringing exciting talent to the region, 2009 didn’t disappoint, with Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy on the guestlist with a recently-bagged Oscar as his plus-one.
