Hope’s Auction Co. Ltd  held their August show and sale of Store Cattle with a catalogued entry of 690

Hope’s Auction Co. Ltd  held their August show and sale of Store Cattle with a catalogued entry of 690.

A wonderful entry of cattle for the August Show and Sale saw a tremendous range of quality stock placed before a highly-competitive ring of  buyers.  From the outset, trade was fast and returns rising on recent months leaving vendors delighted and buyers content with quality purchases.

The show was kindly sponsored by the Brough family in memory of the late Wilson Brough and Judge Mr Jim Brand placed a wonderful Limousin Heifer from W&R Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Distington, as Champion.  This heifer realised £1,500 at sale time and was purchased by the judge.  The same vendor also produced the Reserve Champion which also achieved £1,500 at the sale.

Stronger cattle 18 months old plus receiving a firm inquiry with heifers reaching £1,400 for British Blues again from W&R Lawson, £1,385 for Charolais from DT & G Young, Crummock Bank, £1,335 for Limousin from Messrs Dixon, Bank Head.

Bullocks were also good to sell with Limousins selling to £1,330 from Messrs Dixon, Bank Head and Messrs Scott, Bolton Hall and £1,325 for Charolais from JJ&A Brough, The Clappers.

It was however the younger 10-14 months old cattle that created most post-sale discussion with bullocks to £1,300 three times, with Blonde, Blue and Limousins from JS & HJ Greenbank, The Faulds (x 2) and JB & EJ Peile, Pasture House Farm.

Smart heifers also catching many eyes and these younger heifers topping at £1,250 from Messrs W Ridley, Wood Hall and followed at £1,220, £1,205, £1,200 from RN Scott, West Micklethwaite and £1,190 from Stephen Nixon, Hunters Hall.

Store Bulls were also good to sell with strong competition for all selling to a top of £1,230 and £1,210 from Messrs W Ridley, Wood Hall, £1,160 and £1,150 from Messrs Trafford, Peter House and £1,155 from GEH & SJ Stoddart, Hillside.

Cast cattle - Cows slightly less money this week, the blame for this seems to fall mostly on the school holidays and less beef for processing being required, that said things are not a disaster and a well fleshed 5 year old Limousin Bull from R & D Harland still made 159ppk selling to Cleveland Meat Company. Leading grossing cow was a 9 year old Saler from J J Kemp & Son she sold to Dawn Meats UK. Top price per Kilo was for a Hereford Cow from C M & T F Seymour she was sold to J A Jewitt for 160 pence.

Store & breeding cattle  –  The store cattle remain a very good trade in Darlington, either the falling price of barley or the news that a Test Tube Beef burger has a value of just over £200'000 could be behind this strong trade.
