Hopes Auction Co held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 97 Cattle, 24 Bulls, and 637 Prime Sheep including 85 ewes. A quality entry of cattle met a wonderful trade being much sharper on the week. More could have been well sold.

The top price of 256.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by RE Miller, West Farm, Aspatria, which also realised the top price per head for heifers at £1703.16.

Steers sold to a top price of 233.5 paid for a British Blue also shown by RE Miller, West Farm. Top price of £1655.03 was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by J Dixon & Son, Lesson Hall, Wigton.

Bulls sold to 237.5p paid for a Limousin from RG & JM Smith, Lake View, Keswick.

The top gross was £1440.78 for a Charolais Bull shown by TA Byers, Ellenbank, Boltongate and purchased by B Riley & Sons, Burnley.

Over Thirty Months cattle sold to 209.5 p per kg paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by DA Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Westnewton.

Hoggs – 547. A smaller show of hoggs with numbers beginning to dry up and less quality on offer with trade being slightly dearer than recent weeks especially for heavies.

The top price per head was £142 paid to GEH & SJ Stoddart, Hillside for Beltex purchased by D Paisley, Butcher, King St, Wigton and these hoggs also made the top price per kg at 273.1p

Hopes Auction Co held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 75 Cattle, 14 Bulls, and 1452 Prime Sheep including 164 Ewes and 32 Spring Lambs.

An improved show of cattle with a slight improvement in trade for cattle meeting spec. Today’s sale included the Easter Prize Show and Sale for Primestock. Mr Bill Howard presided over the judging and made the following awards:

Heifers: 1st and Champion, JG & M Little Greenhill Farm, Wigton with a Limousin sold for 251.5p per kg to B Riley & Sons, Dunnockshaw. 2nd, Messrs Teasdale, Low Side, Penrith with a British Blue sold for 248.5p per kg.

Steers: 1st, JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton with a Limousin sold for 228.5p. 2nd, Messrs JW Rae, Greenah Villa, Langrigg with a Limousin sold for 216.5p.

Bulls: 1st and 2nd, JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton sold for 221.5p and 210.5p per kg,

A good show of hoggs in terms of numbers and quality for the Easter show met keen demand with trade similar to that of recent weeks.

The top price today was £195 and 470ppk paid to Messrs Stoddart, Hillside for the Champion Hoggs at today’s Easter Show and were purchased by D Paisley, Butcher, King Street, Wigton.
