Hopes Auction Co held their weekly sale of Primestock on April 8 with an entry of 67 Cattle, 12 Bulls, and 1325 Prime Sheep including 168 Ewes

Hopes Auction Co had an entry of 67 Cattle, 12 Bulls, and 1325 Prime Sheep including 168 Ewes.

The first primestock sale held as a Green Market produced strong results with cattle that were in spec meeting an extreme trade. All classes better to sell. The top price of 267.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by D A Harrison, The Old Vicarage. The top price per head for heifers was £1658.16 for a Limousin shown by Messrs J Dixon & Son, Lesson Hall.

Steers sold to a top price of 230.5p shown by G W Whitfield & Son, Low Stowbank, Cockermouth and purchased by M Wharton, Blackbrow Abattoir, Wiggonby. Top price of £1595.61 was paid for a Limousin Steer shown by R E Miller, West Farm. Bulls sold to 220.5p for a Limousin paid to D Williamson, Seacroft, Allonby. The top price per head was £1426.43 paid for a Limousin Bull shown by Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe. Over Thirty Months cattle sold to 219.5p per kg paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by D A Harrison, The Old Vicarage.

Hoggs -1153. Another good show of sheep forward and all classes met extreme rates with several new vendors attending the mart. The SQQ average being 234.14p. The top price per head was £170 paid to B J Harrison, Beck Farm for a Texel Hogg. Pence per kg honours went to R N Scott, West Micklethwaite for a 42 kilo Beltex selling for 340p per kg. Prime lambs - 4. The first Spring Lambs of the year at this centre met keen demand and a good trade topping at £114 (289ppk) for two Texels weighing 39.5kg from DG & JA Bell, Low Blaithwaite. Others 42kg £113(269ppk) from the same home and Dorsets from J Wise, Low Tarns 41kg £95(232ppk).

Prime ewes -168. A larger show of ewes met another fantastic trade. Texels topping at £155 for Miss P Rae, Greenah Villa; Mules to £101 for ME & JJ Fell, Stanger Hill and Swaledales to £63 from Greystoke Castle Farms. Again more could have been sold to vendors advantage.
