Two North-based women are celebrating the sweet taste of success with their jam and chutney enterprise.

Serap Slorach and Emer Chatterjee, of Gosforth, Newcastle, met through their children then discovered a shared love of baking and cooking. They were looking for an income and work they could do around childcare so two years ago pooled their resources, invested £500 each and Yummy Things was born.

Slorach said: “We started with pop-up teashops but discovered that these are very weather-dependent in the North East.

“So now we make all our jams and chutneys from our home kitchens.

“All our stuff is seasonal and although we have four main lines that we can make throughout the year, we do have to work against the clock, for instance, preparing a batch of strawberry jam into the night to stop it going off in June.” The pair’s efforts are bearing fruit and as well as selling through schools, Christmas fairs and independent outlets, famed Newcastle store Fenwick has placed an order with them.

Slorach added: “We also have an Eat! festival gold award for our spicy apple chutney.

“As a small business you have to be expert in so many different areas.

“It has been a massive learning curve but we enjoy it immensely.

“We love creating products and when we hear of the positive response from people who have enjoyed them, it is just absolutely great.”
