The pet supplies giant has taken over the premises formerly occupied by Asda Living at Newcastle Shopping Park, and the new 10,100 sq ft store has created nine jobs for local people. Over 350 applications were received for the posts at the store, which opens on May 30.

Area manager, Andrea Bruce, said: “There was a strong demand from Byker pet owners for Pets at Home to come to town, and we’re very pleased to have been able to grant them their wish.

“Pets at Home is committed to recruiting from the local area and I’m pleased we’ve found a team of talented individuals in Byker. They’re all extremely passionate about pets and can’t wait to get started.”

The company, founded in 1991, has more than 370 sites across the UK employing more than 6,000 people and won The Sunday Times Top 25 Best Big Companies to Work For 2013.

Anthony Griffiths will be the store manager, having previously worked at the Cramlington branch.

He said: It’s been a busy few months and my team and I can’t wait to open and welcome new customers and their pets .”
