Nortech Group, the Wynyard-based professional engineering design and project management company, has made an additional senior appointment to its team.

Steve Pugh has been appointed to the role of group business development manager. The appointment comes weeks after former Stapleton International (Project Services) managing director Ian Basford was appointed to the new role of director of Nortech Management & Consultancy Services (NMCS.)

Steve Pugh, from Low Fell, was formerly business investment manager at Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU) where he provided strategic account management for businesses with turnovers of between £2m and £200m in the oil and gas, offshore wind, subsea and decommissioning sectors.

While at TVU, Mr Pugh, 31, a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Sheffield, developed a deep understanding and knowledge of the challenges and opportunities faced by the global energy market through his promotion of the Tees Valley as a world leading location for the offshore energy sector.

He has also worked as a mechanical engineer at Kier Group and run a successful and award-winning photography business. Steve also created and managed the £10m Tees Valley Catalyst Fund which was the first of its kind in the world and helps companies bid on bigger projects through removing limitation from performance and warranty bonds. The Catalyst Fund aims to unlock more than £700m of new work to North East England over 10 years.

Mr Pugh said: “I am very pleased to join Nortech, which is one of the UK’s fastest-growing and most respected specialist engineering service providers. The company is a real North East success story and a growing local employer.

“As group business development manager, I oversee the business development, communications and marketing and bid proposal teams across the Nortech Group. This includes overseeing all international and domestic strategy with the aim to take the group from around £10m to £40m turnover within the timeframe of six to 10 years.

“It’s an exciting time for Nortech as we look to develop our international portfolio of clients. Nortech is perfectly placed to take advantage of these emerging opportunities due to our lean, flexible and responsive structure.”

Bryan Bunn, managing director of Nortech Group, said: “I am delighted to welcome Steve to Nortech. He brings with him a first-rate working knowledge of the international oil and gas sector garnered from his senior roles at both TVU and the Kier Group. He is a well-known figure in the sector and his skills and enthusiasm will help to further position Nortech as the go-to company in the industry’s supply chain.”

Nortech has undergone rapid expansion to 80 members of staff and a turnover exceeding £8m since being set up in April 2011.

Nortech’s service offering includes engineering design, procurement and construction management solutions, management consultancy services and specialist technical recruitment to industry sectors including oil and gas, power, chemical and petrochemical, process and manufacturing, renewables, marine and utilities.
