A major international award recognising Europe’s best seed potato supplier has been won for the second successive year by a farmer in north Northumberland.

The Best Supplier Performance from US multinational PepsiCo – parent company of Walkers Crisps, Quaker, Tropicana and Copella – has gone to David Humphreys, representing Greenseed International.

Judging is based on a tough list of key performance indicators such as volume and size forecasting accuracy and seed quality.

David lives near Crookham and grows 80 potato varieties on land leased from Ford and Etal Estate.

He said: “We are very proud of this two-year achievement. It’s great for both Greenseed Northumberland and agriculture in the North East.

“Having PepsiCo backing has allowed us to grow the Northumberland business to 300ha, making us one of the largest potato-growers in the North East.

Paying tribute to Ford and Etal Estates as well as to his dedicated team which does the work, and the many contractors and local businesses who make it all possible, David accepted the award from David Wilkinson, director of agriculture for Pepsico Europe, in Edinburgh last week.
