Seed specialists Nickerson are inviting farmers from Northumberland and Durham to a maize demonstration event later this month.

On Wednesday, September 25, experts will be on hand at Peepy Farm, Bywell, to give maize- growers the opportunity to inspect various types of LG maize grown under plastic and in the open, and to discuss their suitability for particular areas.

The meeting, which aims to be informal and practical, will start with tea and coffee at 10.30am, followed by a light lunch.

It will be tailored to cover a number of relevant regional issues, providing an opportunity for existing growers and newcomers alike to discuss varieties, placement fertilisers, seed rates, sowing depths, weed control, harvest dates, soil structure and seed bed preparation. Advice will also be available on growing maize under plastic versus growing it in the open and how to best use the resulting forage. Technical discussions will be led by Nickerson’s forage product manager Simon Broddle. Seed specialists, including Sean Lovegreen, will also be in attendance, as will David Coates of David Coates Agronomy.
